Each year, when the winter months approach, we are reminded of why we live in Florida. Maybe it's a video of shoveling snow from friends up north, or the delight of opening up windows and sliding glass doors on a beautiful day in January. The Sarasota area has no shortage of gorgeous days this time of year. Enjoy some of the season's most pleasant pastimes:
Sarasota / Lakewood Ranch is one of the premiere areas to hit the links. According to Visit Sarasota, when John Hamilton Gillespie arrived in Sarasota from Scotland in 1885 he was keen to develop a new home in America, which would include his beloved game of golf. By 1886 he had laid out two new golf holes (eventually to be 18 holes) that would be played upon the ground that is currently near Sarasota’s downtown Main Street. This was one of the first golf courses in America, and thus, Sarasota's rich history and love of golf was started.
Sarasota’s many islands such as world-famous Siesta Key, and Anna Maria Island off Bradenton, are vacation spots of many, and home to a lucky handful. In addition to crystal blue water and powder white sand, many visitors are surprised at the amount of wildlife that is present on Florida’s Gulf Coast.
In the winter months, beachgoers enjoy bird watching, walks on the shore, basking in the sun, and picnicking on the beach. For the adventurous, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding are fun activities, even for beginners. Beach time doesn’t have to end in the winter - many consider the winter months to be the most delightful on the west coast of Florida.
