LAKEWOOD RANCH - John Cannon Homes, one of the region's largest custom home builders, says it posted a 67 percent gain in home sales during 2011.
The Lakewood Ranch-based builder also said it has seen a resurgence in interest for homes of larger than 4,000 square feet, a sales point that had been suppressed by the Great Recession.
Cannon sold 62 homes last year, up from 37 in 2010, with prices ranging from $300,000 to $2.5 million.
The company's founder said home builders are dealing with a much more educated buyer base in the post-recession world.
"Customers who are considering building a new home today have done their research," said John Cannon, the company's president and chief executive.
Cannon attributed the growth in sales to the company's Tauri and Rosella models, both in Lakewood Ranch's Country Club East, and its newest model, The Akarra, in The Vineyards at The Lake Club.
The models range in size from 2,417 to 3,500 square feet.
"We have also seen an increase in homes 4,000 square feet and upwards by buyers who are choosing to build homes in communities or on their waterfront lots," Cannon said.
The company also is building The Macalla, a 3,300-square-foot, two-story speculation home on the corner of Wisteria Street and Osprey Avenue in Sarasota, and has started construction on The Amarina, a 3,103-square-foot, two-story model home in Legend's Bay, in West Bradenton on Sarasota Bay. Those homes are scheduled for completion in late spring.
Cannon also continues to build in Lakewood Ranch, The Forest at Hi Hat Ranch, The Concession, Rive Isle, Riviera Dunes, Founders Club, Spice Bay on Siesta Key, Tierra Verde in Pinellas County, MiraBay and Stonelake Ranch in Hillsborough County as well as on owner's lots in surrounding areas.
