Newest Green Business Partner-Sarasota County Florida

One of the area's premier luxury homebuilders has been recognized for its success in constructing environmentally spaces with Sarasota County's newest Green Business Partnership. John Cannon Homes, which is based at 6710 Professional Parkway W., Sarasota, has been operating more than two decades in Sarasota, Manatee, Hillsborough, Pasco and Charlotte counties. In 2006, it won the Excellence Award by Residential Design and Build Magazine.

"The idea of living in an environmentally friendly home is appealing on many levels, and buyers know that ultimately, a green home will save them money," said company President John Cannon. "When constructing our clients' homes, commercial buildings or remodeling, we meet or exceed the guidelines set by the Florida Green Building Coalition."

The company uses recycled content and materials that produce less waste during construction. It gives primary consideration to native tree and plant preservation and reuses all removed topsoil. Appliances are ENERGY STAR-rated. Upon completion, every home is inspected by a Florida Green Build Certifying agent to ensure it meets FGBC standards.

"The commitment of the entire John Cannon Homes team is reflected not only in our customers' homes, but company-wide," Cannon added. "We have demonstrated the environmental stewardship of our business by taking sustainable actions to reduce waste and conserve water, energy and other national resources, and by managing an environmentally friendly responsible business within the community."
According to Sarasota County Recycling Coordinator, John Cannon Homes has set specific standards for recycling and energy and water conservation. "Even though their main office is a new building, they have found ways to improve their own environmental performance by installing compact fluorescent lighting, marking and monitoring storm drains, and using low-toxic and recycle content alternatives," said Tom Franklin.

The Green Business Partnership was initiated under a Florida Department of Environmental Protection grant and is open to all businesses in Sarasota County that implement required resource conservation measures and pass an on-site certification assessment. Each certified business receives a Green Business Partnership certificate and seal they can display to demonstrate their commitment to a healthy environment. They also receive an electronic logo that can be used on company stationary and promotional items.

John Cannon Homes is now listed in a Green Business Partnership directory that is available online at the Green Business Web site, www.scgov.net/greenbusiness.

The Green Business Partnership is actively seeking other participants. For more information, or to request a Green Business Partnership packet, contact the Sarasota County Call Center at 941-861- 5000 and ask to speak with the county's Recycling Coordinator.
